Dive Brief:
- The University of California Office of the President this week reviewed 34 of Edgenuity's blended and online courses, finding that they meet the school's a-g subject area requirements.
- Among the approved courses: Biology and Chemistry with labs; seven AP courses; traditional and integrated Common Core math pathways for Algebra I, Algebra II, Geometry, Math I, Math II, and Math III; electives like Psychology, Economics, Sociology, and Geography; and seven language courses.
- In California, the a-g requirement is meant to guarantee that students are prepared to enter college via a wide variety of classes.
Dive Insight:
The requirements are essentially broken down like so:
A. History/social science
B. English
C. Mathematics
D. Laboratory Science
E. Language other than English
F. Visual and performing arts
G. College-preparatory elective
In order to be considered for admission at UC, students must successfully complete a set number of high school coursework in each area, with specific classes required for some. As the university's site notes, however, there are alternative ways to meet the requirements, and in this case, that's where Edgenuity comes in.
With this approval, completing any of these Edgenuity courses is now just as good as taking the face-to-face class in high school, which is particularly good news for those who may be using the platform for remedial study.
