Dive Brief:
- The Centinela Valley Union High School District's board voted (5-0) this week to fire Superintendent Jose Fernandez following the revelation five months ago that his salary exceeds $674,000.
- The February newspaper investigation that revealed Fernandez's salary outraged parents and others in the community served by the small Southern California school district.
- For a bit of context, Fernandez was making almost $700,000 to run three schools with a total of about 6,600 students. John Deasy, the superintendent of Los Angeles Unified School District, oversees more than 1,000 schools and about 100 times more students than Fernandez did, yet he made $400,000.
Dive Insight:
While it's difficult to find fault with the good news that Fernandez is out-- we still can. How did this issue not arise earlier? Why did it take a newspaper investigation for people to find out about this? Is this not information the school board should have been aware of? Not only does this point to a lack of transparency, but a lack of systems. This profiteering on public dollars has become too commonplace and solutions to fix it are too few and far between.
