Dive Brief:
- ASCD (formerly the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) just updated its Whole Child snapshots, which look at how well states support student health, well-being and academic success.
- The report found that the nation’s high school graduation rate is the highest it’s ever been, at 81%.
- Only three states met the recommended ratio of school counselors to students (1:250) and the average was one counselor for every 482 teachers.
Dive Insight:
ACSD’s snapshots are part of a larger movement to take in multiple non-school driven factors, such as family education level, voting rates, and obesity, when considering student success.
“The Whole Child Snapshots are intended to highlight how well children are faring, both in and out of school, in each state,” David Griffith, ASCD director of public policy said in a news release. “The nation has mixed results, with some encouraging signs of progress alongside some persistent challenges. We want to work with educators and the public to put in the place the strategies to best meet the comprehensive needs of children.”
The snapshots do not grade or rank states, unlike many similar report cards, but instead show progress over time and list recommended steps for each state.
