Dive Brief:
- The Council of Chief State School Officers' eight new 2015 Model Principal Supervisor Professional Standards were based on a year's worth of research and are meant to help supervisors improve the effectiveness of school principals, transitioning them from acting like compliance officers to being more like coaches.
- The standards are voluntary, and their creation reportedly marks the first time standards have ever been developed for the supervisors of school principals.
- Chris Minnich, executive director of the Council of Chief State School Officers, says the new standards bring “much-needed clarity to the role of principal supervisors,” since the position’s duties and qualifications vary from state to state and district to district.
Dive Insight:
According to eSchoolNews reports, principals' supervisors are often lacking in the necessary training and support to help principals improve. That’s why the eight standards, which are said to be “grounded" in the 2015 Professional Standards for Educational Leaders, also contain action points. Organizations that supported the standards' development include the American Association of Colleges of Teacher Education, the National Association of Elementary School Principals, and the National School Boards Association, among others.
