Dive Insight:
Some experts have said that a collaborative public-private approach to funding is good for businesses as well as schools, since it gives business interests a stake in helping the communities they belong to provide good public education. Still, band-aid approaches generally fail to address root causes of poor schools performance and inequity like poverty and discrimination.
A recent book, called “The Prize: Who’s in Charge of America’s Schools,” looked at Zuckerberg's $100 million donation that funded a massive overhaul of the troubled Newark, NJ school district, finding that much of the money was spent on initiatives not directly related to classrooms, such as $31 million for unions and $20 million for district consultants. Unions revolted against a merit-based pay system for teachers.
Meanwhile, Dr. Priscilla Chan launched The Primary School in East Palo Alto, CA, where healthcare and tuition are provided at no cost for all students. The premise behind that project is that student health is intrinsically linked to learning. The school is slated to open in August 2016, and is part of a trend of “whole-child” education programs that consider the impact of outside factors in children's lives and their consequences on learning.
