Dive Brief:
- By the end of 2014, Intel expects to introduce 20 new Chromebooks, including a new "Education Chromebook."
- Intel is staying mum on the specifics of the education Chromebook, but it has revealed that it is bringing technology formerly optimized for Windows to Chrome.
- The light and cheap Chromebooks have already seen success in schools. According to Google's vice president of Chrome OS product management, Caesar Sengupta, Chromebooks are already being used at over 10,000 schools nationwide.
Dive Insight:
Given the success of Chromebooks thus far, it makes sense that Intel would invest more in these budget-friendly computers. In September 2013, Intel offered only 4 Chromebooks, and now its total product line is set to number 20 — a massive increase.
As more technology initiatives are pushed into the classroom, Intel will have a foot up as a diverse provider of computers that bring that technology to life.
And the company seems to know that. "We're just at the beginning of the back-to-school buying season," Sengupta told ZD-Net.
