Dive Brief:
- Speaking with CBS This Morning, U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan blasted Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal for flip-flopping around the Common Core.
- "Gov. Jindal was a passionate supporter before he was against it. That situation is about politics, it's not about education. And frankly that's part of the problem," Duncan told the morning news program, as he accused Jindal of being motivated by personal objectives and not the well-being of students.
- Jindal helped to bring the standards to Louisiana in 2010, but since their implementation, he has changed his tune and now threatens to overturn the standards even without the approval of the legislature and state Board of Elementary and Secondary Education.
Dive Insight:
This is not the first time Duncan has spoken out against Common Core wafflers. Recently, he came down on Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin, who opted her state out of the standards after years of supporting them. Duncan's assertion that Jindal has changed his mind due to personal ambitions is likely tied to allegations by Louisiana BESE President Chas Roemer that Jindal has aspirations to one day run for president.
