July 22, 2025 —In a first-of-its-kind collaboration, renowned educators Douglas Fisher and Nancy Frey have joined forces with Sal Khan, founder of Khan Academy, to co-author Teaching Students to Use AI Ethically & Responsibly, a powerful new resource that helps educators, parents, and school leaders understand and apply artificial intelligence (AI) in meaningful and ethical ways to foster human intelligence. The book, slated for release in Mid-July, is designed to meet the urgent need for AI use in classrooms, homes, and professional environments. Alongside the book, Corwin, a Sage Publishing company, will provide professional learning workshops and online courses that equip educators with the tools they need to successfully address AI in today’s classrooms.
Teaching Students to Use AI Ethically &Responsibly is more than a how-to manual. It’s a framework for preparing students to engage thoughtfully with one of the most powerful technologies of our time. Structured around three essential pillars—Teaching About AI, Teaching For AI, and Teaching With AI—the book provides educators and caregivers with the language, strategies, and confidence to harness the power of AI for education.
“AI is a powerful, complex, and mostly invisible force—much like a whale beneath the surface,” said Fisher. “This book and Corwin’s supporting resources are about helping teachers and families move beyond fear or hype, and instead prepare students to use AI responsibly, critically, and creatively.”
Teaching Students to Use AI Ethically & Responsibly provides readers:
- Clear, age-appropriate explanations of how AI works, including bias, algorithms, privacy, personalization, and more;
- Classroom-ready tools for integrating AI into inquiry-based learning;
- A breakdown of the skills students need for the future of work, including metacognition, curiosity, verification, and digital literacy;
- Practical extensions for multilingual learners, emerging readers, and advanced students; and
- Ideas for families and workplaces, including how parents and tech companies can foster thoughtful AI engagement.
Written for K–12 educators, school and district leaders, families, and even forward-thinking workplaces, this book fills a critical gap in the growing conversation around AI and education.
“Artificial intelligence is already reshaping how we learn and live—but we need to make sure it does so with humanity and purpose,” said Khan. “With Teaching Students to Use AI Ethically & Responsibly, we’re giving educators and families the tools to help students not just use AI, but understand it, question it, and make the most of it to achieve their goals.”
